Twice this week, clients have let me in on a little secret. "I really woke up not wanting to come today, but I'm so glad I did." Both times it felt like they were sharing a secret confession, and I was glad they felt comfortable enough to do so.
My feelings we're hurt, and honestly, I very much get it. I've been there! We all have. Once the honeymoon phase of a new workout routine fizzles out, how do you stay motivated? What do you do to keep yourself moving when you'd rather hit snooze and get more sleep?
Booking a Pilates session is a crucial part of that secret to staying committed to movement. Not only are you coming to me for guidance, to help with safety and form, and learn how to progress through the Pilates reportire. No...if we're being fully transparent, a big part of that transaction is me holding space for you, and accountability. It's not as easy to hit the snooze button and skip the workout when you have someone waiting for you to show up because you said you would. And for most of us, we need some form of accountability to keep us going! I've learned not to feel bad about this fact...because I need it too. And once you can accept that accountability is a key part to your commitment to a healthier you, then all you have to do is figure out how to build in that accountability into your routine.
Something I love about the private sessions is, once I have this information about how you're feeling that day (like, say, not really wanting to be doing Pilates per se....) I'm able to take that into account. There is so much we can do in a session to keep your body moving and feeling good, that doesn't always have to feel like hard work. Sometimes just trying something new can help bring that freshness back to the workout. Or, maybe we just need to take some time to roll out our feet, try out some barrel stretches, and feel good about the fact that at least we SHOWED UP.
There is something awesome about being around others that can really inspire us, too. I'll be honest. On days that I wake up not really excited to move myself, I think about the consistency of my clients, and that really motivates me. Try jumping into a group class if you're able. Find a friend and plan a "duet" session. I have two ladies from two different states that meet weekly for a duet Pilates virtual session and we have the best time.
Give yourself grace on those days you're "just not feeling it", and find a way to keep that ball rolling. Keep moving. Slow down the pace, find a new movement to try, tell someone how you're feeling, but then try to keep moving. If you need some accountability, I'm always here. Just keep showing up-you'll never regret it!
